More About…

I went to hear Gary Marcus speak on what a kluge the human brain is. He’s a great speaker and it was a fascinating talk. The talk was sponsored by The Humanist and the Council for Secular Humanism. While I was there I picked up their respective magazines. I was reading Free Inquiry, the magazine of the latter organization, and came across two things that pertain to previous posts here.

First is a long article called The Big Religion Questions Finally Solved where the author shows more evidence to support the idea that “religious belief and activity are seen as a superficial coping mechanism that is easily cast off when the majority in a given society enjoy democratic governance and a secure, comfortable middle-class lifestyle.”

Could this by why the Republicans are so determined to destroy Social Security and are so against a rational health care system? They want to ensure that Americans continue to feel insecure and America thus continues to be a highly religious society?

The online magazine doesn’t have a link to this particular article, but I did find a PDF version which you can read here.

Second is this cartoon, which is relevant to the posting about Compound Interest and the Population Problem.
