Let’s hear it for a shorter work week

Why should France have all the fun with its 35 hour work-week?

Dean Baker has written an interesting article that says: “Then, Obama and the Congress should very quickly turn to taking a second, temporary step to create more jobs: creating incentives for companies to reduce the workweek and work year for many Americans.”

Quite an interesting idea since it gives people more time to do things – i.e., spend money, and gives companies an incentive to hire more people, who will then spend more money.

He points out that “No doubt, such a suggestion will make conservatives howl about liberals attempting to turn the United States into France“, but there are worse things to be like than France, one of them being the pre-20th Century world that conservatives want to take us back to.
